About Us

Hi, my name is Karen Moakes. Based in the beautiful Scottish Borders, south of Edinburgh, I started Grace Woodcraft to simply pass the time during the long dark winter evenings around 3 years ago. I am a Mum to 6 Border Collies and also pictured next to me here is my friend Tiddles, who keeps me company when I work.

I got started in woodcraft when I created a few signs for my friends & family from the wood from trees that had fallen here in storms. Additionally, I started creating coasters & keyrings. Things snowballed from there.

I sell my crafted items at Turnbulls and The General Store in Selkirk. I also do the Edinburgh Grassmarket on the 1st & 3rd weekend of each month, so if you are there – please stop and say hello!

I also make items for the Support In Mind, Scotland and Dogs First, Selkirk charities.

Process:

My process is simple really, I begin by choosing the perfect piece of wood for the job. Cutting it to size I then draw onto the wood. I then engrave the details onto the wood, hand paint the item & finish of by varnishing.

Commissioning:

I am more than happy to take commissions from people. The way this works is that we’ll typically have a conversation first to establish just what you are looking for. I will then create a pencil sketch, which I will send to you to ensure you are happy with the direction. Once that has been confirmed, I will then engrave, hand paint & varnish.
